Our Mission: Transforming Lives, Building Hope
At S&D PJ Housing, our mission is singular and resolute: to transform lives, one woman at a time. We’re dedicated to empowering women transitioning from incarceration by offering safe housing, comprehensive educational resources, and impactful community initiatives. Each of our programs is meticulously crafted to nurture growth, provide unwavering support, and facilitate successful reintegration into our communities.
The Vision: Creating Safe Spaces for Transition
Our vision is rooted in the belief that every individual deserves equitable opportunities for success upon reintegration into society. With a holistic approach, we provide safe housing, essential job skills, life education, electoral inclusion, urban community gardens, and holistic healing programs.
Our Mission: Empowering Reintegration
At S&D PJ Housing, we confront the immense challenges hindering successful reintegration after incarceration.
Each year, over 640,000 individuals return to our communities facing institutional gaps, legal restrictions, societal biases, and economic hurdles, disproportionately impacting Black and Brown communities.
More than half of these returning citizens struggle to secure stable employment during their initial reentry phase.
The statistics are sobering: individuals with past incarcerations are only half as likely to secure jobs, encountering unemployment rates five times higher than the national average.
In today’s digital era, their past shadows persist, complicating their journey toward a fresh start.
The discrimination and barriers faced by returning citizens perpetuate a cycle of economic instability, pushing many back into familiar survival methods.
Tragically, nearly two-thirds of formerly incarcerated individuals find themselves back in prison within three years of release.
Breaking the Cycle
F.R.E.E. Program
At S&D PJ Housing, our Life Skills Program is tailored to each woman’s unique journey, helping her overcome barriers to lifelong stability. We foster cooperative living environments, enhancing fiscal management skills like household budgeting. Women receive personalized development plans focusing on crucial life skills such as time management, budgeting, education, and employment. Our commitment lies in supporting these women as they rebuild their lives within a nurturing community.
Breaking Employment Barriers
The statistics speak volumes: among working-age individuals aged 25-44, the unemployment rate for formerly incarcerated people stands at 27.3 percent, compared to just 5.2 percent for their general peers. S&D PJ Housing actively works to dismantle employment barriers, enabling formerly incarcerated individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity.
